Entelodon ( Syn. : Elotherium Pommel, 1847 ) was a genus of large, pigs similarly cloven , in the Oligocene lived in Europe and Asia. The name Entelodon means “perfectly toothed ”in German.

description

Entelodon had a massive body, a short, strong neck, and a large, long, broad, and flat skull that could reach a length of three feet. The cheekbone was enlarged. The dentition was complete and more closely resembled that of primitive condylarthra such as the mesonychia . Tooth formula 3-1-7 / 3-1-7, the simple, conical premolars are not differentiated from molars . The conical and laterally flattened teeth were good for chewing bones. The wear of the canines shows that they were highly stressed and not primarily for the display behavior towards conspecifics, like pigs and hippos were used. The animals were probably omnivores, which did not spurn carrion and occasionally actively hunted.

The thoracic vertebrae had long spinous processes and the tail was short. The front legs were stronger than the back legs, and the outer bones of the legs, such as the shin , were much shorter than the bones closer to the body, such as the femur . This means that the entelodon probably wasn't a good and persistent runner. In contrast to the Anthracotheriidae , Entelodon only had two toes.

Systematics

Entelodon is part of the Entelodontidae family . The closely related North American Archaeotherium different entelodon morphologically hardly.
