The continental shelf sector , which extends from the German North Sea coast to the northwest and which makes up the German Exclusive Economic Zone , is referred to as the duck bill. This designation is occasionally used by official bodies, while laws designate the area as the German exclusive economic zone in the North Sea .

The station ENTE3 (duckbill station 3) with the coordinates of 55.92 °  N , 3.35 °  O is also the most northern and western point of the German Exclusive Economic Zone.

In the north-western part the duck's bill includes a strip of the Dogger Bank , and extends beyond into the central North Sea.

The definition of the duckbill was made by bilateral agreements between the Federal Republic of Germany, the United Kingdom , the Netherlands and Denmark on the basis of the judgment of the International Court of Justice on the North Sea Continental Shelf Case (1969). The contracts for this were signed on October 30, 1970 and set the size of the "duck's bill" at around 36,000 km². The exclusive economic zone , which lies outside the territorial sea , is only 28,600 km² in size.

The border between German, Danish and British areas on the continental shelf is determined by the following coordinates ( European date 1950 / ED50), which are connected by great arcs :

Natural gas production

1974 was the first successful drilling for natural gas in the duckbill, about 300 km from the German North Sea coast . By 1988, the gas field A6 / B4 was examined more closely by three further boreholes . On 18 September 2000 a preparatory phase of 18 months after the scheduled delivery operation of three began sunk recorded holes. The gas is transported through a pipeline on the seabed from the production site to Den Helder in the Netherlands. The project is the first offshore project in the area of the German continental shelf of the North Sea, planned and implemented in close cooperation with Wintershall Noordzee BV in The Hague .
