Gentian distillery L. Eberhardt
The gentian distillery L. Eberhardt was the most important Enzian distillery in Germany.
Lazarus Eberhardt (born 1849 in Maßbach ) founded the Enzian distillery in Munich in 1879 . After his death in 1902, his son Sigmund (born 1878) took over the company. During the Nazi era , the company was “Aryanized” and in 1938 sold far below its value.
Completely destitute, Sigmund Eberhardt and his wife Gretchen emigrated to the USA in 1939 . After the Second World War , Sigmund Eberhardt returned to the Federal Republic of Germany and was able to get his company back in 1950 in a restitution procedure. In 1952 he sold the company and moved permanently to the USA, where he died in 1957. Until 1969 the company produced spirits under the name L. Eberhardt .
