Epeolus variegatus is a bee from the family of Apidae .

features

The bees are seven to eight millimeters long. The body of the females is mainly colored black, their mandibles , labrum , calli, tegulae , scutellum , sixth tergite , splints ( tibia ) and tarsi are red. The body is not very hairy, but has felt patches of hair. The first tergite has two elongated patches of hair lying one behind the other on each side that merge on the outside. The second tergite has two, the third and fourth tergite each four hair spots, next to each other on the rear edge. The mesonotum is hairy short. The labrum has a longitudinal furrow and four to five teeth, the middle two of which are strong. The fifth sternite is longer than it is wide and at the end it is saddled across. Its rear edge is bulging. The males have a similar coloration and hairiness as the females, but in most individuals only the tegulae, the splints and the tarsi are red. The second and third sternite have interrupted bands on the rear edge, this is not punctured in the middle.

Occurrence and way of life

The species is common in southern, central and southern northern Europe. The animals fly from early June to late September. They parasitize Colletes daviesanus , Colletes fodiens and Colletes similis .
