Ephysius of Cagliari (* around 250 (?) In Jerusalem (?); † 286 (or around 304) in Nora near Sant 'Efisio near Pula in Sardinia ) is a Christian martyr .

Vita

According to legend, Ephisius was a soldier in the bodyguard of the Roman emperor Diocletian . Tradition reports that he was the son of a Christian father and a pagan mother. The soldier came to Sardinia to fight the barbarians and was sentenced to death by beheading in 303 for his conversion to Christianity and his missionary activities.

Adoration

The saint is the patron saint of Pisa and Sardinia . Its popular veneration can be found in the area of Cagliari . His relics were brought to Pula and later transferred to Pisa.

In Pisa and Sardinia it is remembered with processions on May 1st . According to legend, he is said to have saved many people with his intercession during a plague epidemic in Càgliari in 1656, which is why the Sant'Efisio procession has taken place since then .
