description

Epiphyllum phyllanthus has many branches. The main shoots are round or triangular at the base over a length of 50 to 100 centimeters. Above that, they are flattened for about 100 centimeters (or more). From these flattened shoot parts, the side shoots appear, which are only round or triangular over a length of 2 centimeters. The adjoining 25 to 50 centimeters long, linear, light to medium green shoot section is stiff to bendable and 3 to 10 centimeters wide. He has a noticeable midrib. The drive edges are lobed and toothed. The areoles on the shoots are mostly covered with cream-colored wool and only rarely with hair.

Fruit on Epiphyllum phyllanthus

The salver-shaped flowers appear on the flattened stems. They are very variable in size, ranging from 7.5 to 30 centimeters in length and 4.5 to 23 centimeters in diameter. The flower tube is usually twice as long as the bracts . It is straight on the upright shoots and strongly curved on the hanging shoots. The outer bracts are greenish yellow with a red sheen, the inner bracts are white to cream-colored and 3 to 10 millimeters wide. The ellipsoidal to egg-shaped, somewhat purple-red, smooth fruits are 3 to 8 centimeters long and do not smell.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

The distribution area of Epiphyllum phyllanthus extends from Mexico through Central America to South America ( Argentina ). The first scientific description as Cactus phyllanthus was published in 1753 by Carl von Linné . Adrian Hardy Haworth placed them in the genus Epiphyllum in 1812 .

Epiphyllum phyllanthus is in the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Least Concern (LC) ", d. H. classified not endangered.
