Episyron is a genus of the wasps (Pompilidae). There are nine species in Europe.

features

The species of the genus Episyron are medium to large wasps. The head and thorax have long, erect, dark hair. Pronotum , scutellum , metanotum , propodeum , the hips ( coxes ) of the hind legs and the first tergum is close-fitting, scaly hairy. The convex face plate ( clypeus ) is long and wide. They, the hips and the ventral side of the thorax are short, silk, and fluffy. The maxillary palps are quite short. The mandibles have two additional teeth. The label is convex. The short metapostnotum is below the metanotum. The propodeum is increasingly curved backwards. The wings are tinted brown, the front wings have a brown band at the tip. The wing mark ( pterostigma ) is small. The rails ( tibia ) have long thorns, in the females the tarsi of the forelegs have well-developed tarsal ridges. The claws are bifid in both sexes. The abdomen is usually speckled, in the males the seventh tergum has a white spot.

Way of life

The wasps predominantly colonize open, sandy habitats. The females dig their nests in the ground. The larvae are supplied with spiders from the Araneidae , Lycosidae and Tetragnathidae families .
