Epitaph for Arnold and Gottfried Metternich in Bad Münstereifel

The epitaph for Arnold and Gottfried Metternich in the former collegiate church of St. Chrysanthus and Daria in Bad Münstereifel , a town in the Euskirchen district in the south of North Rhine-Westphalia , was created at the beginning of the 17th century.

It is attached to the wall on the north side of the choir . Arnold Metternich died in 1567 and Gottfried Metternich in 1602.

The central field, framed by pilasters bearing coats of arms , contains a white marble relief depicting a battle. In front of it, the two Metternich brothers kneel on the base of the relief. The pilasters carry a horizontal beam , which was hung with coats of arms. A round coat of arms with a seated putto is also attached.

The inscription on the plaque reads:

“EN CHRYSANTHICOLAE PRAECLARO STEMMATE FRATRES ARNOLDUS METRENICH ET GODEFRIDUS ERANT. OCCUBAT HIC CUM SOL. TUA SCORPIO ROSTRA TENERET, ALTER AT HAECCE CHORO MOESTA SIGILLA LOCAT, AESTIFERIS CANCRI TITAN UBI FULGIDA CHELIS. PLAUSTRA DABAT SUMMO MOX REDITUR A POLO. "
