Dorothea Susanne von der Pfalz (1544–1592) was the wife of Duke Johann Wilhelm I of Saxe-Weimar and the mother of Duke Johann III. She was buried in the city church in Weimar. The alabaster and slate epitaph by an unknown master is only partially preserved. The upper part was removed when the gallery was built in the 18th century. Between the four Ionic columns , the Duchess is depicted on the far left and her two daughters on the right, kneeling in prayer. The Duchess has tied her hair in a hood , her two daughters are shown with their hair loosened. The smaller daughter is accompanied by an angel playing the lute . The young woman is Maria (1571–1610), later abbess in Quedlinburg , and the girl is Sibylla Maria (1563–1569), who died young. On the upper edge between the columns there are four coats of arms of the ancestors of Dorothea Susanne von der Pfalz.

Between the pillars there are four panels depicting the Annunciation and the Brazen Serpent on the left and the birth of Jesus and the baptism of Christ on the right.

"I know that my saviour is alive.

Elector Palatinate, daughter

And Wilhelm, Duke of Saxony, wife,

Faithful Patroness of the Church and Schools,

Not so much mistress of the fatherland as mother,


Haven and refuge for the needy,

Beaten by long illness,

With a soul always directed towards God

Pious and blissfully different

March 29th in the year of the Savior, 1592,

at the age of 47 years, 4 months, 10 days.


Because you live, I live with you, I know, Christ Redeemer.

Because I live through you, my death is my life. "
