2005 Sarand earthquake

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sarand earthquake occurred on February 22, 2005 at around 05:55 local time (03:25 CET ) in the province of Kerman in southeastern Iran . It was an earthquake of intensity 6.4 on the moment magnitude scale . The hypocenter was 14 kilometers deep about 60 kilometers northwest of the provincial capital Kerman near the small town of Sarand , which was largely destroyed. The Iranian Natural Disaster Staff also put the destruction of several villages in the area at 20 to 70 percent. About 30,000 people in 40 villages were affected by the earthquake. Most of the buildings in the poor, sparsely populated region are made of adobe bricks that can hardly withstand earthquakes.

The number of deaths is given as more than 600, around 990 people were injured. Since several roads in the region were blocked and heavy rain on the day of the quake hampered the rescue work, significantly higher numbers of victims were initially expected. The estimated number of injured ranged between 1,000 (state television) and 5,000 (ambulance doctors), depending on the source.

On December 26, 2003, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck in the same province about 250 kilometers south-east of Sarand near the city of Bam, killing at least 26,000 people. In the summer of 2004 there was another, but lighter, earthquake in the region.

Severe earthquakes occurred in the province of Kerman as early as 1981, in June at Golbaf with a magnitude of 6.9 and in July at Sirj and Shahdad with a magnitude of 7.3.
