The Erg d'Admer (also Erg Admer ) is a sandy desert ( Erg ) of the Sahara in southern Algeria .

topography

The Erg d'Admer covers an area of around 6000 km² and is largely located in the province of Djanet . The southern foothills of the Erg reach into the province of Tamanrasset .

In the north-west-south-east direction, it extends over around 190 km in length, the width varies between 20 km and a maximum of 60 km. In the northeast the Erg is bounded by the Tassili n'Ajjer Mountains . The western border is formed by the wide Wadi Tafassasset (Oued Tafasaset), which extends into the Niger on the edge of the Tenere .

The Erg d'Admer does not form a continuous sandy desert, but consists of a network of narrow dune ridges that rise up to 200 m above the flat bedrock, the highest elevations of which reach 1240  m .

Settlement

There are no settlements within the Erg. With the exception of the oasis town of Djanet in the northeast and the small town of Bordj El Haouas in the north, there are no settlements in the vicinity of the Erg. There are several military stations in the south and south-east due to the proximity to the Niger border.

In the central and southern part of the Erg there are around 100 barrows (mostly round graves , but also some keyhole and antenna graves ) as evidence of a Neolithic settlement on elevations of the solid rock base . Only a few of these graves exist in the northern part of the Erg.

vegetation

With the exception of a few bushes on its edges, the Erg d'Admer is completely free of vegetation.

traffic

The middle part of the Erg is crossed by two easy-to-drive slopes west of Djanet, which only lead over a few gentle dune ridges. There are no slopes in the north and south of the Erg d'Admer.
