Bordj El Haouas ( Arabic برج الحواس, DMG Burǧ al-Ḥawāss ; Further spelling: Bordj El Haouasse ) is a small oasis town in the southern Algerian province of Djanet .
location
The city lies on the edge of the broad plain of the Oued Bou Rahla to the south. The edges of the Tassili-n'Ajjer Mountains rise about 5 km to the northeast . The provincial capital Djanet is 110 km southeast and the city of Illizi about 180 km north.
history
During the French colonial rule the city was called Fort Gardel. A later name was also Zaouattellaz.
Infrastructure
Bordj El Haouas and the southwestern town of Tabakat are supplied with electricity from a diesel-operated power plant operated by Sonelgaz . The rapidly growing city has mosques, a school and a pharmacy and is also a military base.
traffic
Bordj El Haouas is located on the national road 3 , which connects the two provincial capitals Illizi and Djanet and is a regional transport hub. From here the national road 55 branches off , which leads via Serenout and the Hoggar Mountains to Idles and into Tamanrasset , 550 km away . This previously very bad slope is currently being developed as an asphalt road. To the south, along the Oued Tafassasset on the west side of Erg d'Admer, there is an initially well-developed slope into the Niger .
