Erhard Engler

Erhard Engler (born July 18, 1938 in Groß Nebrau , Marienwerder district , West Prussia , today Nebrowo Wielkie , Sadlinki (gmina) , Powiat Kwidzyński ; † October 8, 2012 in Berlin ) was a German Romanist , Lusitanist , Hispanist and translator.

life and work

Erhard Engler studied Latin American Studies at the University of Rostock and was an exchange student in Cuba in 1963 . From 1964 to 1974 he worked for Radio Berlin International (RBI). He refused to accept the demands of the Ministry for State Security , which had repeatedly asked him to “work together”, and preferred to give up his position in the RBI editorial team. In 1975 he received his doctorate on Euclides da Cunha from the University of Rostock . A spiritual champion for the national independence of Brazil . From 1975 to 2003 he was a lecturer in Brazilian Studies, then Lusitan and Hispanic Studies at the Institute for Romance Studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin . Latin American authors who visited him smuggled the books necessary for his work into the GDR. As a result of his non-cooperation with the state power, a travel ban was imposed on him. After the fall of the wall , the Brazilian was able to travel to Brazil for the first time in 1991.
