Erhard Junghans (born January 1, 1823 in Zell am Harmersbach , Baden, † September 9, 1870 in Schramberg ) was a straw hat and watch manufacturer.

Life

His father, Nikolaus Junghans (1784–1845) was a master knitter and copper printer in Horb . His mother was Barbara Schöneberger (1783–1846). Nikolaus and his family were brought to Schramberg by his old friend Isidor Faißt in 1841 to work as a copper printer in his stoneware and majolica factory in Uechtritz and Faist . Erhard's older brother (Franz) Xaver (1820–1900) emigrated to the USA in 1847 as a carpenter .

Erhard began a two-year commercial and technical apprenticeship in 1841 with the Zurich merchant Johannes Tobler, who ran the Schramberger straw factory for poor employees . Erhard then traveled to Switzerland and France to improve his language skills.

In 1845 he married Louise Tobler (1820–1910), the daughter of his boss, with whom he had four sons and four daughters; including: (Heinrich) Erhard (1849–1923), Frida (Katharina) (1851–1937), Arthur (1852–1920), Georg (1861–1927; technical director at Siemens & Halske in Berlin) and Anna (1856–1908 ) and Eugen (1858–1860).

After his father-in-law's death (1854), Erhard became a partner and managing director of the straw factory. When he asked for more wages for his successful work and did not get it, he quit, but was persuaded by the Count von Bissingen to stay in Schramberg.

In 1859 he and his brother-in-law Jakob Zeller-Tobler bought a plot of land with water power in the Geißhalde and tried his luck with the Zeller & Junghans oil mill , which, however, was unsuccessful. As a result, from 1861 onwards, clock parts were used.

This, among other things, at the suggestion of Ferdinand von Steinbeis . Erhard was in contact with his brother Xaver in the USA. Xaver initially supported his brother with tips and tools. In 1862 Xaver came to Schramberg with machines. Erhard's brother-in-law Zeller separated in the meantime from the company with Erhard. On March 10, 1866, an OHG of the brothers Xaver and Erhard was entered in the commercial register. Erhard and Xaver manufactured watch parts in the American way and are successful with it. In early 1869, Erhard hired Paul Landenberger (1848–1939) as a commercial clerk for the watch factory Gebr. Junghans . Erhard Junghans was an elected member of the first Rottweil Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 1866.

On September 9, 1870, Erhard Junghans died of a throat ailment. His last wish was not to hand over the company to anyone other than his sons Erhard (II), Arthur and Georg. The grave is located in the Schramberg municipal cemetery in the central Black Forest .
