In 1949, Kaps and another entrepreneur founded Helene Simon Kunststoffverarbeitung and -produktion in Leipzig, which in 1950 was renamed Sika Produkte Scharfe & Kaps KG, which Kaps later took over as sole management. In the mid-1950s, Sika first specialized in the production of technical foils with the innovation of a process for the production of laminated plastic films, so-called laminating films. From 1967 Sika became the sole manufacturer of food packaging made from these materials in the GDR. In 1972 the company was expropriated in the course of the forced nationalization of most of the medium-sized companies still under private law. Only after the political change could the company be repurchased from the trust . Until his death, Kaps remained senior boss on the board of Sika Werke GmbH in Leipzig-Eutritzsch.

In 1962, Kaps was imprisoned for criticizing the Berlin Wall and spent five years in Waldheim prison . He then began private studies in sociology and theology. He had been writing for a long time, among other things to better deal with the time in prison. However, his publishing house does not state that he began his literary activity until 1978. His subjects were his own life experiences as reflected in German history. In 1994 he was politically rehabilitated.
