Eric Otto Gehrig (born December 25, 1987 in Harvey ) is a former American football player who was mostly used as a midfielder . He was most recently under contract with Chicago Fire .

He is currently an assistant trainer at Chicago Fire.

Career

Youth and amateur football

Gehrig played for his university's college team, the Loyola Ramblers , while at Loyola University Chicago . For this he completed a total of 73 games in four years.

Club career

Gehrig signed a professional contract with the MLS franchise Columbus Crew on March 17, 2011 . For this club he made his competitive debut against the Colorado Rapids on June 26, 2011 . Gehrig was in the starting line-up for the first time on July 6, 2011 in a 1-0 win against the Vancouver Whitecaps . On December 10, 2014, he was selected as the tenth pick in the first round of the 2014 MLS Expansion Draft by Orlando City , but was transferred to Chicago Fire shortly afterwards in exchange for a pick in the second round of the 2016 MLS Super Draft .
