Eric Walter Tunstall (born November 21, 1950 in Hartlepool ) is a former English football player .

Career

Tunstall joined Hartlepool United from St Patricks Juniors , a local club in Hartlepool ; on his 18th birthday he signed a professional contract. After he had convinced with his performances in the reserve team, he made his debut for the first team in the third division on December 21, 1968 by substitution in a 1: 2 defeat against FC Barnsley .

The junior team led the midfielder in December 1968 as captain to a 2-1 win against Newcastle United at St. James' Park as part of the FA Youth Cup . This game was also decisive in his being signed on January 23, 1969 by Newcastle's head coach Joe Harvey for a transfer fee of £ 3,500. To negotiate the contract, he was driven by Hartlepool coach Gus McLean , who had described Tunstall in November 1968 as a "powerful, tenacious player in the style of Joe Harvey and Jimmy Scoular, " and who negotiated the transfer fee at the same time.

Under coach Benny Craig , he won an international junior tournament in Rotterdam , the Netherlands , in the summer of 1969 alongside Keith Dyson , Chris Guthrie , Keith Kennedy and Martin Burleigh , but he was denied a breakthrough in Newcastle's professional team. After his professional career, Tunstall worked for Reeds Corrugated Cases , a cardboard box manufacturer, and played for their works team in the Hartlepool League for many years .
