Eric Van Rompuy

Eric Karel Paul Van Rompuy (born November 23, 1949 in Uccle / Ukkel ) is a Belgian politician of the Christian Democratic Party in Vlaams (CD&V). He has been a member of the Flemish Parliament since June 1999 .

Life

Eric Van Rompuy was born on November 23, 1949 to Victor Van Rompuy. He is the brother of former Belgian Prime Minister Herman Van Rompuy and communist politician Tine Van Rompuy .

Van Rompuy attended the Sint-Jan Berchmans College in Brussels until 1967 and graduated in 1971 with a bachelor's degree in philosophy from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven . In 1975 he received his doctorate in business administration from the same university . From 1976 to 1981 he worked as an economist at Kredietbank (now part of the KBC Group ).

Van Rompuy began his political career in 1977 as chairman of the youth organization of the Christelijke Volkspartij (CVP) (CD&V since 2001) and held this office until 1983. In 1981 Van Rompuy was a member of the European Parliament , but was not re-elected in the 1984 European elections . He then sat from 1985 to 1995 for the CVP in the Belgian Chamber of Deputies and from 1991 to 1995 he also served as chairman of the CVP group in the Flemish Council. In 1995 he was appointed Flemish Minister for the Economy, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises, Agriculture and the Media and held this post until 1999. He was then Chairman of the CVP / CD & V in the Flemish Parliament until 2004.

Van Rompuy has also been politically active on the local level in the Zaventem municipal council since 1982 . Since 2007 he has held the office of aldermen for finances, spatial planning and urban planning.

In 1999 Van Rompuy was awarded the title of Commander of the Order of the Leopold for his services . He is married and has a daughter.
