Eric Wagner (born April 24, 1959 ; died August 23, 2021 in Las Vegas , Nevada ) was an American singer . Wagner became popular with the doom metal band Trouble in the early 1980s . Especially after leaving the band in the 1990s, he worked on various projects.

Career

Wagner became the singer of the doom metal band Trouble in the early 1980s . The band debuted through Metal Blade Records in 1984 .

Trouble initially generated little popularity despite benevolent reviews and efforts by the label. Based on the Christian lyrics, the band was the first band to be called White Metal . A term that later established itself for a spectrum of metal with Christian texts. The band gained international attention only later and was able to gain a steady following and cult status over the years as part of a "US Doom Trinity" with Saint Vitus and Pentagram . Until the mid-1990s, Wagner remained part of the group that, according to music journalist Garry Sharpe-Young, is a “cult act” of Doom Metal. After his departure, Wagner formed groups such as Lid and The Skull , with which he was able to build on the success of Trouble, and took part in the Probot project initiated by Dave Grohl . Wagner died of pneumonia resulting from a COVID-19 infection in August 2021 at the age of 62 in a Las Vegas hospital while touring with The Skull.

style

Wagner's high-pitched vocals are considered distinctive and particularly important for Trouble's success. Thereby Wagner is attested positively to have a "tearful voice", which, however, as a "high-pitched screeching voice polarized [the listeners] from the start". The music journalist Aleksey Evdokimov even describes Wagner in his Doom Metal Lexicanum as “one of the most charismatic singers on the rock and metal scene”, whose voice is unmistakable.
