Erich Haase (resistance fighter)

Erich Haase (born January 4, 1908 , † January 31, 1987 ) was a German communist resistance fighter against National Socialism , a prisoner in the Sachsenburg and Buchenwald concentration camps and an editor .

Life

Haase learned the trade of a fitter after attending primary school . He became a member of the Communist Youth Association of Germany (KJVD) and joined the Communist Party of Germany (KPD). From 1932 to 1933 he was a member of the KPD district leadership in Saxony. Haase was committed against the emerging National Socialism . After the transfer of power to the NSDAP , he was taken into “ protective custody ” and sentenced to several years in prison . He was then transferred to the Sachsenburg concentration camp. In 1938 he was sent to the Buchenwald concentration camp, where he was employed in the prisoner infirmary and in the outpatient department of Gustloff-Werke II. He was also classified as a locksmith: his report from 1945 on this activity was entitled “The construction of the crematorium ”. He also worked in the DAW as a locksmith and on the side made tools and utensils in blacksmith design, sometimes decorated with sayings that expressed the longing for freedom .

When the Nazi rule was eliminated, he took up a degree and joined the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). From 1947 to 1949 he was the first chairman of IG Bergbau Leipzig. Haase was the manager and editor of the Leipziger Volkszeitung . As a member of the Buchenwald Committee of the GDR, he wrote pamphlets on the history of the resistance against National Socialism. Haase last lived as a veteran in Leipzig.
