Erich Leichsenring

Erich Leichsenring (born November 15, 1904 in Heidelberg ; † February 4, 1985 ) was a German manufacturer of Erzgebirge folk art.

Life

He was the son of the turner and toy maker Emil Leichsenring, whose workshop in Seiffen he took over after his father's death in 1951. Emil Leichsenring, on the other hand, had taken over the company from his father August Leichsenring, who had registered this trade in May 1904 and, in addition to miniature horse-drawn vehicles, was already producing cars as wooden toys. The name Leichsenring-Seiffen became the “epitome of genuine folk art”.

Erich Leichsenring helped out in his father's workshop as a child. From 1915 on he attended the pre-school of the State Toy School in Seiffen and from 1919 this technical school. In 1931 he became a partner in the company Emil Leichsenring und Sohn in Seiffen, which was considerably expanded in 1932 with a workshop. Initially mainly miniature vehicles were produced, the range was expanded to include the production of special vehicles. Above all, Erich Leichsenring brought figurative design into his parents' production and in 1935 introduced the transition from painting the figures to matt coloring in his workshop. During this time, the range was also supplemented by the scenic and technical craftsmanship that would later be typical of the Leichsenring company as new arts and crafts elements, including, for example, mette lights, wood collectors, lace makers and flower sellers. These jewelery figures soon became collector's items.

From 1960 the figures were glazed in color. The artistically crafted flower balls and the typical rolled flowers were of particular importance in later times.

His son Günter Leichsenring took over his father's workshop in Seiffen in 1974 as a “recognized artist in the craft” (title was awarded in 1973). The family business of Werkstatt Leichsenring , which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2004, still exists today.
