Erich Rathfelder (born March 30, 1947 ) is a German journalist and author . He is the author of several books on the history of the Balkans, Bosnia and Kosovo.

Life

Rathfelder studied history, political science and philosophy at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and the Free University of Berlin from 1968 to 1975 . He worked for the Berlin daily taz since 1983 . There he was initially a Western European editor, in 1985 he became an Eastern European editor and was therefore also responsible for the Balkans and former Yugoslavia. After the entry ban into the GDR and other non-reform states of the Warsaw Pact such as Romania, Bulgaria and what was then Czechoslovakia in 1987, he worked regularly as a reporter in the Balkans. At the end of the eighties he visited Yugoslavia several times as a Taz reporter, especially Serbia and Kosovo, Slovenia and Croatia. Since June 25, 1991 he has been reporting on the wars in Slovenia and Croatia, since 1992 he has remained as a freelance journalist in the former Yugoslavia and reported on the Bosnian war for over three years. In 1997 he reported continuously from Kosovo, but was declared an undesirable person by the Serbian government in June 1998 and expelled from Serbia and thus from Kosovo. The entry ban was only lifted after the NATO war in Kosovo. Since then he has lived as a freelance journalist in Sarajevo and Split.
