Charnay-lès-Mâcon is a French municipality with 7376 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Saone-et-Loire in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It belongs to the arrondissement of Mâcon and the canton of Mâcon-1 .
geography
The community is located in the urban center west of Mâcon in the Mâconnais countryside . Neighboring municipalities are Hurigny in the north, Mâcon in the east and south, Fuissé and Solutré-Pouilly in the south-west, Davayé in the west and Prissé and Chevagny-les-Chevrières in the north-west.
The Petite Grosne River runs along the western municipal boundary and flows into the Saône at Mâcon .

history
The place is attested in 739 under the name Carnacus . This is composed on the one hand of the Welsh Carn for "pile of stones" and the Welsh suffix -acum for a place or property. It is homonymous with Carnac , Carnac-Rouffiac, Charnat and various other community names with the Charnay component .
Since 968 attested as a place of worship for the veneration of St. Peter, the church of the market town of Charnay took over the name of Sainte-Madeleine in the 16th century .
