The municipality was formed on January 1, 2017 as Commune nouvelle from the previously independent municipalities Donzy-le-National , Massy , La Vineuse and Vitry-lès-Cluny .

La Vineuse-sur-Fregande is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Salornay-sur-Guye in the north and northeast, Flagy in the east and northeast, Lournand in the east, Cluny in the southeast, Château in the south, Buffières in the southwest, Chiddes and Saint-Vincent-des -Prés to the west and Saint-André-le-Désert to the northwest.
