La Guiche is a commune with 623 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in Saône-et-Loire in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It belongs to the arrondissement of Mâcon and the canton of Cluny .

La Guiche is located in eastern France in the Charolais countryside , 93 kilometers northwest of Lyon , about 20 kilometers northeast of Charolles , the seat of the sub-prefecture of the Arrondissement, and about 20 kilometers northwest of Cluny at an average altitude of 401 meters above sea ​​level . The Mairie stands at a height of 422 meters. Neighboring municipalities of La Guiche are Marizy in the northwest, Le Rousset in the northwest, Chevagny-sur-Guye in the southeast, and Ballore in the southwest. La Guiche belongs to the Roman Catholic parish Les Monts du Charolais of the Autun diocese .

The marble tomb of Louis-Emmanuel de Valois (1596-1653) in the church of La Guiche was classified in 1902 as a Monument historique . The writer Paul Cazin said that it was the most edifying tomb he had ever seen. It was damaged during the French Revolution (1789–1799) and restored in the 19th century for the La Guiche family. In the church there are also the remains of a liter funéraire from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Economy and Infrastructure

There is a hospital and retirement home in La Guiche. The main building was built in 1916 with the help of German prisoners of war ( First World War ). The building was inaugurated in 1918. Outbuildings were built in the following years. In 1941 the hospital was converted into a prison camp for sick political prisoners on behalf of the Vichy regime ( World War II ). On July 14, 1944, the Resistance took over management. Extensive renovations were carried out in 1957 and 1958.

In 2009, 51.1 percent of the workforce were employed in the municipality, the rest were commuters . 11.1 percent of the employees were unemployed .
