description
In 1892, on the occasion of the upcoming 100th birthday of the chemistry professor (1794–1863), a committee met to collect donations for a statue. In the fall of 1893 , the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität commissioned the sculptor Ferdinand Hartzer to design the monument . He decided on a simple granite plinth on which Mitscherlich, as a young scientist, stood in a relaxed posture. While his right hand rests on his hip, his now empty left hand originally held a feldspar crystal - a reference to his scientific research into isomorphism in crystals. The somewhat larger than life bronze figure gives the impression that Mitscherlich is trying to explain scientific results to the viewer. A pile of books behind the right foot is supposed to underline his scholarly status. A bronze plaque with his life data is attached to the base.
The memorial originally stood in the small chestnut grove behind the Neue Wache and was only moved to its current location in the course of the new buildings from 1913 to 1919.
