Erich Schmidt (born December 29, 1895 in Neubrandenburg ; † February 6, 1952 there ) was a German politician ( KPD / SED ). He was a member of the state parliament of the Free State of Mecklenburg-Strelitz .

Life

Schmidt, son of a working-class family, completed an apprenticeship as an office assistant from 1910 to 1912 , after which he worked in gas companies. From 1915 to 1918 he fought as a soldier in the First World War .

In January 1919 he became a member of the SPD , but joined the USPD at the end of 1919 and the KPD in April 1920. He became chairman of the KPD local group in Neubrandenburg and was a city ​​councilor for the KPD from 1920 to 1923 . From July 1923 to 1932 Schmidt was a member of the Mecklenburg-Strelitz state parliament. He was arrested on May 6, 1924 and sentenced on June 24, 1925 by the State Court in Leipzig to two and a half years in prison. At the end of August 1925, however, he was released early due to the Hindenburg amnesty .

After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists, he was in " protective custody " from March to the end of 1933 . After his discharge, he worked as an emergency worker from 1934 and as a warehouse worker in Neubrandenburg from February 1943. After the failed assassination attempt on Hitler on July 20, 1944 , he was imprisoned again in August / September 1944 as part of the “ Aktion Gewitter ”.

After the war ended in 1945, Schmidt was again a member of the KPD and second secretary of the Neubrandenburg district leadership. In 1946 he became a member of the SED, but withdrew from active political work.
