Legal basis and structure
The legal basis for the election of the Landtag was the electoral law of January 30, 1919. According to Section II of the Basic Law of the Free State of Mecklenburg-Strelitz of May 23, 1923, the Landtag consisted of 35 members (5 of them from the Ratzeburg constituency ) who, according to the principle of Proportional elections were elected for a term of four years. The minimum age for the active right to vote was 21 years and for the passive right to vote 25 years.
Its tasks were the legislation, the supervision of the state leadership and administration, the exercise of the budget law, as well as the ministerial prosecution if necessary. The president of the state parliament had a prominent position. He appointed the members of the state government. Another special feature was the state committee consisting of 7 state parliament members. This exercised the rights of the parliament when it did not meet.
After the state parliaments of the two Free States of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and Mecklenburg-Schwerin, under National Socialist pressure, decided on the reunification of Mecklenburg at a joint meeting in Rostock in October 1933 and implemented it with effect from January 1, 1934, the state parliament of Mecklenburg became with the law over the rebuilding of the Reich on January 30, 1934 dissolved.
After the Second World War , the state of Mecklenburg was rebuilt. Its state parliament existed until the dissolution of the states in the GDR .
