Erich Walter (born May 15, 1933 in Frankfurt am Main ; † January 21, 2015 there ) was a German boxer .

Life

Walter was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1933 as the eldest son of seven siblings. In 1950 he started boxing as a teenager. In 1954, he was as an amateur German champion in the light middleweight . In 1957 he lost as a professional in the fight for the German middleweight championship against Peter Müller on points. As a professional, Erich Walter was able to record 29 victories (17 through knockout ) in a total of 50 fights. In 1960 he was defeated by the three-time Olympic champion László Papp .

In the 1960s in particular, the city of Frankfurt am Main was the center of German boxing. In addition to Erich Walter and his younger brother Erwin, Kurt Ströer, Manfred Schneider, Nic Sührig and the first German European boxing champion Herbert Schilling , the dazzling Osswald "Ossy" Büttner was a representative of the Frankfurt boxing scene.

A tragic accident occurred in a knockout victory in 1962 against the American boxer Lion King. Walter hit King unprotected on the chin, whereupon he immediately fell to the ground. Lion King died of a cerebral haemorrhage on the way to the hospital . The accident changed Walter's fighting style; he then played only nine fights, of which he lost five. In 1965 he ended his boxing career and started his own business in the construction industry.

Erich Walter was married and had a son. In January 2015 he died at the age of 81 after a short, serious illness in a Protestant hospice in Frankfurt am Main.
