Erima is a place in Madang Province in Papua New Guinea .

location

Erima is located in Astrolabe Bay between the abandoned Stephansort station in the south and Balima in the north. The Jori River flows into the bay between Stephansort and Erima. It is about five kilometers to the Ramu Highway in the northwest.

history

Erima with Erima harbor was a location of the New Guinea company founded in 1891 , which was then taken over by the Astrolabe company founded in 1890 in the same year . With the Stephansort plantation, which was important during the German colonial era, Erima and Erima harbor were connected by a 7.5 kilometer long and wide driveway. In addition, the place was connected to Stephansort, Konstantinhafen and Bogadjim via a narrow-gauge field railway . At the end of the 19th century, Erima, used as a plantation, consisted of a large main house, outbuildings and a drying barn , while at the port, in addition to an administration building, associated outbuildings and warehouses, the port facilities themselves were also worth mentioning. A route to Friedrich-Wilhelms-Hafen , which had been discussed for a long time at the time, was not implemented for cost reasons.

After the First World War , Australian troops occupied the territory of German New Guinea . The German settlers were expropriated in the 1920s in order to settle Australians. The infrastructure was largely destroyed during the Second World War , when New Guinea was occupied by the Japanese , and was not fully restored even later under the rule of Australia.
