Eriosyce aspillagae is a species of plant in the genus Eriosyce from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the Chilean hacienda owner Don Manuel Aspillaga where the taxon was discovered.
description
Eriosyce aspillagae initially grows with flattened, later spherical, dark green shoots and reaches a diameter of 4 to 10 centimeters. The root is a large, carrot-like taproot . There are initially five to eight, later up to 22 ribs , which are notched and thus divided into cusps. The graying thorns are white and have a darker tip. The one to four central spines are thick, straight to curved and 2 to 3 inches long. The four to 20 thin, needle-like radial spines are 1 to 2 centimeters long.
The funnel-shaped, light silk yellow flowers have a reddish central stripe, appear from young areoles and have a diameter of up to 4 centimeters. Your pericarpel and the flower tube are covered with wool and bristles. The egg-shaped to elongated fruits are up to 1 centimeter long. They tear open with slits at their base.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Eriosyce aspillagae is common in the O'Higgins region of Chile . It was first described as Echinocactus aspillagae in 1929 by Johannes Söhrens . Fred Kattermann placed them in the genus Eriosyce in 1994 .
