Eriosyce senilis is a species of plant in the genus Eriosyce from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet senilis means 'senile'.

description

Eriosyce senilis usually grows individually with almost spherical to spherical to elongated shoots and reaches a diameter of 4 to 12 centimeters. The root is a large, bulbous tap root . There are 13 to 21 ribs that are depressed or notched. The areoles on it are woolly. The straight to strongly twisted thorns are white to gray or yellow or brown. Some of them are hair-like, the rest are stiff and needle-like to soft and pliable. The four to 20 central spines are 3 to 6 inches long, the 15 to 40 radial spines are 2 to 6 inches long.

The narrow, funnel-shaped, various carmine-red flowers appear from young areoles. Your pericarpel and the flower tube are covered with wool and bristles. The elongated, red fruits open with a basal pore.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Eriosyce senilis is common in the Chilean region of Coquimbo in the valley of the Río Elqui . It was first described as Neoporteria senilis in 1936 by Curt Backeberg . Fred Kattermann placed them in the genus Eriosyce in 1994 .

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Eriosyce senilis subsp. coimasensis (F.Ritter) Katt.
  • Eriosyce senilis subsp. elquiensis Katt.
  • Eriosyce senilis subsp. senilis

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
