Eristalinus taeniops is a fly fromthe hoverfly family (Syrphidae).

features

The flies reach a body length of 11 to 14 millimeters. They have a bee-like yellow-black markings, the red-yellow abdomen has black bars and spots. The thorax is metallic dark green and has dense yellow hairs, the scutellum has a red-yellow sheen. The compound eyes each have five distinctive, vertical, dark stripes. The transparent wings are light yellowish brown at the base, the holders are colored bright yellow.

Occurrence

The animals occur in North Africa and southern Europe , east to western Asia. The species can be found in forests, forest clearings, rivers, streams, pools in the dune systems and in the coastal swamps of lagoons. They fly from April to October with a peak in May to August.

Way of life

The adults suck nectar from yellow and white flowers such as heather, daphne, ragweeds and rose plants. In hot weather you can watch them drinking by small streams. The larvae live as rat tail larvae in the mud, in animal carcasses and in flowing water contaminated with pig manure.
