Erki Pehk (born March 23, 1968 in Võru , Estonian SSR ) is an Estonian conductor .

Life and music

Erki Pehk attended the renowned music high school ( Estonian Tallinna Muusikakeskkool ) in the Estonian capital from 1982 to 1986 with a focus on piano and conducting .

From 1986 to 1993 he studied choral conducting with Ants Üleoja at the Estonian Music Academy ( Eesti Muusikaakadeemia ) in Tallinn . At the same time he studied orchestral conducting with Peeter Lilje and then from 1992 to 1994 with Paul Mägi at the Latvian Music Academy in Riga .

Since 1994 Erki Pehk has been conductor at the Estonia National Opera in Tallinn.

Since 2001 Erki Pehk has been Artistic Director of the renowned Klaudia Taev International Competition for Young Singers in Pärnu, Estonia, and in 2005 he was appointed to the same position at the Pärnu International Opera Festival (called "Promfest"). In these two positions he caused an international sensation. Erki Pehk was awarded the Estonian State Prize for Culture in 2010 for these services and in particular for the production of Massenet's “Thais”.

Erki Pehk has appeared as a guest conductor at several theaters and with several orchestras in and outside of Estonia. Since 2002 he has been a permanent guest conductor at the Minsk State Opera and Ballet Theater in Belarus; he made his debut with the Nederlands Operastudio in November 2010 at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam; In January / February 2011 he led a major tour of “Die Fledermaus” through many cities in Belgium and Holland. In 2010 he was appointed the first guest conductor of the Belarus State Radio Symphony Orchestra.

Erki Pehk played with well-known soloists such as the trumpeter Markus Stockhausen, the Russian violinist Tatjana Grindenko, the countertenor Max Emanuel Cencic, the flautist Camilla Hoitenga and many others. In 2000 he founded the orchestra of the 21st century in Tallinn; As the musical director of this ensemble, he primarily devotes himself to contemporary music, but also cultivates the classical repertoire of Estonian and other composers.
