Fish as a door handle - an early Christian symbol

The Erlöserkirche is an Evangelical Lutheran church on Ossenpadd Street in Uetersen . It was built in 1961, roughly at the same time as the Tornescher Church and the Church in Moorrege . The design comes from the architect Otto Andersen .

The outer structure

The brick building is dominated by a copper-clad tower with a long, pointed helmet. The tower roof merges seamlessly into the copper roof of the nave , so that the tower and nave appear closely connected. The nave widens to the east because of the cross-shape of the floor plan. In the rear part of the nave, the white-painted concrete glass windows take up a large part of the side wall. The building is adapted to street level, without a step you can get inside the church. The street continues into the church, as it were, as indicated by the paved central aisle. The handle of the entrance door is designed as a fish, which takes up an early Christian symbol .

The inner

Under a tent-shaped roof, the space extends on both sides of the central aisle that leads to the altar. Daylight from a ceiling window illuminates the altar.

View of the organ prospect
  • The large figure of Christ above the altar was made by the sculptor Rolf Goerler . Christ spreads his arms in a gesture of blessing. His suffering shows in the marks on his hands and feet and in the expression on his face.
  • The colored concrete glass windows on the side were designed by Ernst Günter Hansing . The color blue dominates and forms a lively contrast to the brown and red tones of the brick and furniture inside.
  • The organ front designed by Otto Andersen extends above the entrance . The organ was built in 1963 by the Walker company. It has 21 registers , two manuals and a pedal.
