Ernan McMullin

Ernan Vincent McMullin (born October 13, 1924 in Ballybofey , Ireland ; † February 8, 2011 in Donegal , Ireland) was an Irish-American philosopher and science theorist .

McMullin studied physics and theology at Maynooth College, Ireland and was ordained a Catholic priest in 1949 . After stints at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, he received his doctorate in 1954 on The quantum principle of uncertainty . From 1954 he worked at the Department of Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame (USA), where he has been Professor of the History of Science and Philosophy of Science, Science and Religion since 1967. In 1986 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1994 the philosopher, who made contributions to topics such as Galileo Galilei and the compatibility of a European understanding of religion and the theory of evolution , retired.
