Ernest Capendu , actually François-Pierre-Ernest Capendu (born November 30, 1825 in Paris , † May 19, 1868 ibid) was a French writer.

Life

Capendu came from a wealthy family and was raised by private tutors . When a cholera epidemic broke out in Paris after the February Revolution in 1848 , Capendu and his family left the city and settled in Marseille ; later he lived for some time in Oran ( Algeria ).

From there, Capendu made extensive trips to (and through) Algeria, Morocco and Syria . Experiences from these journeys were to be found again and again in his novels.

At the request of his publishers, Capendu returned to France around 1855 and settled again in Paris. In 1858 he married Adelaïde-Pierrette Dorenlotte, but she died a year later. Shortly thereafter, Capendu married Lucile Delaville for the second time; both marriages remained childless.

On May 19, 1868, Ernest Capendu died in Paris and found his final resting place in the Père Lachaise cemetery (Division 12).

reception

Capendu was u. a. a contemporary of Alexandre Dumas , Paul Feval and Pierre de Ponson de Terrail (1829–1871). He wrote his novels alone, his plays were always created in collaboration with colleagues such as Théodore Barrière or Xavier de Montépin (1823–1902).

Many of his novels first appeared as serial novels in newspapers and magazines. For later publication as a book, Capendu sometimes revised his texts.
