history

The observation tower was built by the Schmöllner Maschinenfabrik Paul Sylbe on behalf of the Schmöllner Beautification Association for 6,000 gold marks based on the model of the Paris Eiffel Tower . It was inaugurated on April 28, 1893, on the occasion of the fortieth wedding anniversary of the Saxon-Altenburg ducal couple Ernst I and Agnes von Anhalt-Dessau , and presented to the public.

In the years 1961 to 1963, reconstruction work was carried out by the Schellenberg company and the Piehler Brothers' art locksmith's shop from Schmölln. From 1963 to 1993 the tower was used by the former Deutsche Post as a television converter . Radio systems were dismantled as early as 1992. Until it reopened for its 100-year inauguration on April 28, 1993, the tower was renovated and the adjacent area redesigned. On this day it was handed over to Schmölln eV , then Mayor of Schmölln, Herbert Köhler .
