Ernst-Arnošt Gottlieb

Ernst-Arnošt Gottlieb (born March 18, 1893 in Brno ; † April 10, 1980 in São Paulo ), also Ernst Gottlieb , was a versatile Czechoslovak athlete of Jewish origin. He was one of the most famous Jewish athletes in the country during the interwar period .

Life

Gottlieb comes from a Jewish entrepreneurial family from Brno who felt they belonged to German nationality. After attending high school, he studied business academy and a college of textiles in Leeds . After his return to Brno he was called up to the army in 1914, attended an officers' school and in 1917 came to the Eastern Front . He joined the Czechoslovak Legions and commanded a gunnery division. After the end of the war he worked as an authorized signatory and later director of a rubber factory in Brno.

In 1939 Gottlieb emigrated to France, where he volunteered for the Czechoslovak army in exile , although he was not accepted into it. He therefore traveled to Brazil to São Paulo, where his brother lived, he settled there and was active in trade.

Athletic career

Gottlieb, who lived in Brno, a city with a lively activity of strong Jewish sports clubs such as Makabi Brno or Bar Kochva Brno , registered with the German Lawn Tennis Club. His strength was doubles, but he also played singles in tournaments. He was also interested in rowing. He was able to record the following successes:

  • In 1924 he became vice-champion of Czechoslovakia in doubles with Fridrich Rohrer and also vice-champion with Jozefína Lobkovicová in mixed. At the Olympic Games in Paris Gottlieb and Rohrer did not achieve any notable success
  • In 1925 he was for the first time - together with his partner Rohrer - champion of the Czechoslovak lawn tennis association ČSLTA, i.e. Czechoslovak doubles champion
  • In 1926, both partners achieved the title of Austrian champions in doubles, and they also started at the international French championships
  • In 1927 Gottlieb played in the Davis Cup
  • also in 1927 he won with Jan Koželuh in doubles and with Jozefína Lobkovicová in mixed at the championships of the country

1927 is said to be the best of his sports career, even if he stayed active for a while. Altogether you can count over 100 excellent results at Gottlieb: 42 times 1st place, 31 times 2nd place and 31 times 3rd place in various tournaments and national or international championships.
