Ernst-Eckhard Koch (born May 26, 1943 in Pressburg , Slovak State ; † September 7, 1988 in Berlin ) was a German physicist who had dedicated himself to the application and further development of synchrotron radiation .

Life

After graduating from high school in Gießen, he studied physics at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich from 1962 . He became active in the Corps Makaria Munich and distinguished himself twice as a senior . As a student assistant with Armin Hermann , he wrote the first of 200 publications . He wrote his diploma thesis with Walter Rollwagen . It shows the guideline for all of his publications: the elucidation of the electronic structure of organic molecules. Supervised by Andreas Otto and in great independence, he worked on his doctoral thesis in the then still young synchrotron radiation laboratory at the German Electron Synchrotron (DESY). In 1972 he was supported by the University of Hamburg with distinction for Dr. rer. nat. PhD. Koch was of paramount importance for the BESSY project in Berlin and the HASYLAB at DESY in Hamburg. In 1978 he qualified as a professor for experimental physics at the University of Hamburg . From 1979 to 1984 he was deputy head of HASYLAB. In 1984 he was appointed full professor by the University of Hamburg . From 1985 he headed a research group on molecular crystals at the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society . In 1987, the Free University of Berlin appointed him honorary professor for experimental physics. The following year he died at the age of only 45. The Helmholtz Center Berlin for Materials and Energy awards the Ernst Eckhard Koch Prize for excellent dissertations at BESSY or HASYLAB .
