Ernst-Hugo Järegård (1961)

Ernst-Hugo Järegård (born December 12, 1928 in Ystad , † September 6, 1998 in Lidingö near Stockholm ) was a Swedish actor . He became known to an international audience through the role of Dr. Helmer in the television series Hospital der Geister , shot by Lars von Trier .

biography

Born in Ystad, Järegård gained the reputation of being one of the outstanding actors at the Royal Dramatic Theater in Stockholm from 1962 . There he shone in many well-known roles. For example, in 1963 as the eccentric Hitler in Bertolt Brechts Schweyk in World War II , in 1966 in Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot , in 1967 as Orgone in Molières Tartuffe and many others.

Järegård had a penchant for portraying villains and bad guys and was happy to take on roles accordingly. Less often he played lyrical roles. Due to his expressive singing voice, he occasionally played in musicals. Because of his pronounced Scandinavian accent, he was also a popular speaker in cartoons and when recording children's audiobooks.

Järegård was internationally recognized with the role of Dr. Helmer in Lars von Trier's television series Hospital of the Spirits . He also stood in front of the camera for von Trier in his film Europa . In total he played in around 20 films and around 40 TV productions.

For his work as a stage actor, Järegård was awarded the Thaliapriset in 1967 and the Eugene O'Neill Award , two of the most important Swedish theater awards, in 1975 .

Järegård had been married to Karin Nordström since 1950 , with whom he had a son, Johannes. He succumbed to cancer in 1998.

personality

Järegård had a colorful personality and loved to attract attention through originality. He was very careful about his appearance and in his private life liked to wear clothes by Italian designers. In his view, an actor represented not only himself but also, as a publicly known person, the theater and the arts as such. Therefore, he felt it was his duty to appear appropriately in public.

In the documentary on the DVD for his film Europa , Lars von Trier says that working with Järegård was not easy. Järegård was constantly sulking and imposing special conditions regarding the treatment of his person. Järegård insisted on staying in a certain room in a certain hotel while filming was taking place. In addition, Järegård almost compulsively tended to draw the audience's attention even in those scenes in which he should only appear in the background. Ultimately, von Trier resorted to rewarding Järegård for "appropriate behavior" with cigars, so that Järegård adjusted his behavior. Nevertheless he missed "dear Hugo" very much and he missed him terribly.

The following quote is said to come from Järegård: "If I wake up in the night and get a sandwich from the refrigerator, then all it takes is a ray of light from the refrigerator and I start to act."
