Ernst Ferdinand Yxem

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ernst Ferdinand Yxem (born March 12, 1799 in Magdeburg , † April 14, 1867 in Berlin ) was a German classical philologist and high school teacher. After attending the Magdeburg Domgymnasium , Yxem studied classical philology, from 1819 to 1822 in Halle , from 1822 to 1823 in Berlin . Here he was appointed teacher at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium after the probationary year 1824 . In 1826 he was promoted to senior teacher and in 1828 to high school professor. In 1858 he retired.

Act

In addition to his teaching activities, Yxem came out through various publications in the school programs of the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium , especially on the Platonic dialogues and Goethe's biography. His essay "About Goethe's Character" received positive reviews. He described Goethe's "... passionate persistence in the field of dependence on nature ..." and assumed that in Goethe's personal development the "... law of physical progression ... is recognizable as the law of spiritual progression". The reviewer mentioned Yxem's extensive knowledge and ability to think philosophically. Between 1837 and 1843 Yxem worked on the Halle Yearbooks .

In his advertising pamphlet, the Protreptikos , he advocates studying the sources of Platonic writings. Neither ancient Plato researchers like Thrasyllos nor contemporary ones like Wilhelm Gottlieb Tennemann and Friedrich Schleiermacher could replace independent research on the texts. Following authorities would have the disadvantage that some things are overlooked in Plato. With Schleiermacher one must beware of his pre-Christian premonitions, which he believes to be found in Plato. Thrasyllos believe that in Plato everything revolves around self-knowledge . Finally, Tennemann regards Plato as one-sidedly rationalist . To claim that there is only one interpretation of Platonic writings is no alternative to thinking for yourself and studying for yourself. He agreed with Friedrich August Wolf on this . "I have no choice but to invite my readers to leaf through the certificates that we still have in our hands. Will they come back next time?"

reception

Yxem's publications on Goethe's Hermann and Dorothea are repeatedly mentioned by Goethe researchers as being knowledgeable and informative.

His Goethe titles are listed in corresponding bibliographies and Goethe bibliographies. Yxem's contribution to the authenticity, sequence and logical theories of Plato's first three tetralogies is indicated by u. a. Lutoslawski in the archive for the history of philosophy .
