Life

Stumbling block for Freudenthal in Kassel

After his birth, his families moved to Wehlheiden , a district of Kassel. As a 10-year-old he became a member of the local gymnastics club. After completing elementary school, he became a student at Realgymnasium 1. He joined the Jewish sports club "Bar Kochba", played handball and became a referee for it. He was also a member of the BSK 26 sports club.

In 1929 he married Frieda Backhaus (born March 1, 1909), who was a devout Christian and came from Kassel. After that their son Wolf (Hebrew Ze'ev) was born. Due to anti-Semitic riots, the young family went to London, where Ernst Freudenthal trained as a car mechanic and driving instructor . In 1936 the family went to Palestine , what was then the British Mandate. Ernst Freudenthal got a job at the "Orient Driving School" in Tel Aviv. In 1943 he opened a company selling food processing equipment in Tel Aviv, which still exists today. When their son Ze'ev was lost as a soldier for a long time in the Suez War in 1956 , the couple adopted the 11-year-old Lea. Ze'ev returned home a little later, and the couple have had two children since then.

Freudenthal founded the Association of Former Kasselans in Israel in 1972, which had around 180 members in the mid-1970s. Furthermore, for a long time he campaigned for the city partnership between Kassel and Ramat Gan , which has existed since 1990. At his suggestion, there were also meetings between Kassel sports clubs and Israeli clubs.

In Israel, Freudenthal continued to be the chairman of CENTRA, the "Association of Clubs of European Country Teams", for "many years".
