Ernst Germer

Ernst Germer (born July 14, 1901 in Ottweiler ; † January 8, 1987 in Trippstadt ) was a German artist , art teacher and university professor . After working in higher education, he was a lecturer at the University Institute for Arts and Crafts Education at the State School for Arts and Crafts Saarbrücken and Professor for Art Education at the University of Education in Saarbrücken.

Life

Germer was born in Ottweiler in the Saarland in 1901. Between 1915 and 1921 he was trained at the teachers' college in Ottweiler and then studied at the Kassel Academy with Ewald Dülberg . Until 1926 he was a teacher at the Staatliche Kunst- und Kunstgewerbeschule in Saarbrücken, before he began studying at the art school in Berlin, where he was enrolled until 1928 and studied with Willy Jaeckel and Georg Tappert .

From 1928 to 1939 he worked as an art teacher at the advanced school in Ottweiler. In 1939 he was drafted into military service and was taken prisoner by the Soviets, from which he did not return until 1950. From 1951 he was again an art teacher at the State Realgymnasium Neunkirchen / Saar . From 1956 he was significantly involved in setting up a university institute for art and craft education at the State School for Art and Crafts in Saarbrücken, left the secondary school service and took on a lectureship as well as the technical management of the institute. In 1984, the Saarland government awarded him the title of professor for art education at the University of Education, where he also held the office of rector and vice-rector.

After the death of his second wife, the pianist Marta Germer-Müller, he moved to Trippstadt , where he worked as an artist until his death in 1987.

The university professors Wolfgang Kermer and Horst Linn are students of his time as an art teacher in Neunkirchen.

Particularly noteworthy is Germers graphic work. Germers' work was shaped primarily by the experiences of the war and being a prisoner of war. During these years Germer had drawn a lot and processed the impressions into oil paintings until the 1980s.
