Ernst Hairer (born June 19, 1949 in Nauders ) is an Austrian mathematician whose main areas are the ordinary differential equations and their numerics.

From 1968 Hairer studied mathematics at the University of Innsbruck , where he was an assistant at the Mathematical Institute from 1970 to 1974 and received his doctorate in 1972 under Gerhard Wanner ( a general method for ordinary differential equations ). From 1974 to 1976 he was Chef de Travaux at the Mathematics Section of the University of Geneva , then from 1976 to 1980 again assistant at the University of Innsbruck, where he completed his habilitation in 1979. In 1980/81 he was a deputy professor at the University of Heidelberg , where he became C3 professor for applied mathematics in 1981. After having been visiting professor there in previous years, he became professor adjointe in 1985 and professeur ordinaire at the University of Geneva in 1999 . He is known for the two-volume work Solving Ordinary Differential Equations (Hairer, Syvert Nørsett , Gerhard Wanner ) and the freely available implementations of numerical integrators .

He is an honorary doctor of the University of Lund , received the Peter Henrici Prize of the ETH Zurich and the SIAM with Wanner in 2003 and was John von Neumann visiting professor at the Technical University of Munich in 2009/10 . In 2007 he was visiting scholar at the Isaac Newton Institute in Cambridge.

From 1997 to 2002 he was co-editor of the SIAM Journal of Numerical Analysis and since 2005 of Mathematics of Computation and Foundation of Computational Mathematics .

He has been married to Evi Gröbner since 1973 and has two sons and a daughter. His son Martin Hairer is also a mathematician, professor at Imperial College London and recipient of the Fields Medal .
