Ernst Heinrich Wackenroder (born November 29, 1660 in Poseritz , † December 27, 1734 in Loitz ) was a German Lutheran clergyman and church historian in Swedish Pomerania .

Life

He was the son of Heinrich Wackenroder. The father Heinrich Wackenroder (* in Alfeld near Hildesheim; † 1678) had studied in Rostock, then moved to Pomerania and became a preposition at the Marienkirche in Poseritz. Ernst Heinrich Wackenroder was first taught by his father, after his death he attended the Stralsund grammar school and received lessons in classical and oriental languages from his brother-in-law Heinrich Pladecius. From 1680 he studied at the University of Wittenberg , where he obtained his master's degree, and then at the University of Greifswald . As court master he then accompanied the sons of several wealthy families on their travels. He gave philosophical lectures in Wittenberg and Greifswald.

In 1689 he went to Trent on Rügen to become pastor at the St. Catherine's Church . There he married the daughter of his predecessor Matthias Edler. In 1716 he became pastor and prepositor in Loitz, where he worked until the end of his life.

During his time in Trent, Wackenroder collected news about the parishes on Rügen, using documents and chronicles as well as the stories of older people. He summarized these in a description of the Rügen church history from the introduction of the Reformation in Pomerania to the end of the 17th century, which was still considered an essential source in this area in the 19th century. Before going to press, Wackenroder gave the manuscript to several friends to view and copy. In 1730 the work was published by Jakob Löffler without his knowledge, who had acquired a handwritten copy of the manuscript at an auction. Wackenroder then issued a statement in which he described the genesis of his work and how it was passed on and described the published work as incomplete and unfinished. Jakob Löffler then published a second, corrected edition in 1732, citing Wackenroder as the author and apologized in the preface for having promoted the print only with the best of intentions. In 1737 Löffler published another comment with additions to the preposition Bergen auf Rügen by Johann David Fabarius .
