Ernst Hufschmid (born February 4, 1913 in Basel ; † November 30, 2001 ) was a Swiss football player and coach who was also a member of the national team for several years .

society

Hufschmid played for FC Basel from 1929 to 1948. During his football career, he played 322 competitive games and scored 62 goals. In the 1932/33 season he won the Swiss Cup with FCB when Basel defeated Grasshopper Club Zurich 4-3 in the final. The coach at that time was Karl Kurz .

Basel coach in the 1946/47 season was Anton Schall , who suffered from a rare heart disease. Schall led the Basel team to victory in the Cup, but died shortly afterwards at the age of 40 while training on the football field. Hufschmid then took over as a trainer and remained in office for five years until 1952.

National team

Hufschmid made his debut for the Swiss national soccer team on June 19, 1932 in the Svehla Cup ( European Cup for national soccer teams ) in the Wankdorf stadium , where Switzerland beat the Hungarian national soccer team 3-1 . He scored his only goal for the national team on October 29, 1933, also in Bern against Romania in a 2-2 draw. Hufschmid was a member of the national team during the 1934 World Cup in Italy. Switzerland opened the World Cup on May 27, 1934 at the Stadio Calcistico di San Siro in Milan with a 3-2 win over the Netherlands; it was Leopold Kielholz scored twice. In the quarter-finals, Switzerland met Czechoslovakia on May 31st in Turin. The game was played at a high level and was characterized by outstanding goalkeeping performances by Frank Séchehaye and František Plánička . Oldřich Nejedlý decided with a goal in the 82nd minute to 3-2 the game for the later finalists.

Hufschmid played his last game for the "Nati" on November 4, 1934 in a 4-2 win in the friendly against the Netherlands again in Wankdorf.
