Ernst Rudolf Kötter (born August 7, 1859 in Berlin , † January 26, 1922 in Aachen ) was a German mathematician.

Kötter studied mathematics in Berlin from 1879 and received his doctorate in 1884 under Karl Weierstraß . In 1887, after completing his habilitation, he became a private lecturer at Berlin University, and in 1894 a professor. From 1897 he was Professor of Descriptive Geometry in Aachen as the successor to Friedrich Schur .

Kötter dealt with algebraic geometry and geometry. In 1886 he won a prize from the Berlin Academy for his basic features of a purely geometric theory of algebraic plane curves . In 1901 he published a history of projective geometry from Gaspard Monge to Karl von Staudt in the annual reports of the DMV .

He was a member of the Leopoldina .

Ernst Kötter was the brother of Fritz Kötter .
