Ernst Kuenzl

Ernst Künzl (born August 22, 1939 in Karlsbad / Bohemia ) is a German classical archaeologist and historian of culture, science and medicine who is known far beyond archaeological specialist circles as a non-fiction author .

Life

From 1945 Künzl lived in Bavaria and from 1949 to 1958 attended the humanistic high school in Aschaffenburg . After studying Classical Archeology, Classical Philology and Ancient History at the universities of Munich , Frankfurt am Main and Cologne from 1958 to 1966, Künzl received his doctorate in May 1966 with a thesis on early Hellenistic groups under Heinz Kähler in Cologne. From 1966 to 1970 he was an employee of the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn and assistant at the Archaeological Institute of the University of Cologne , from 1971 to 2004 he was at the Roman-Germanic Central Museum in Mainz , most recently as chief museum director and director of the Roman Age department .

His main areas of work are ancient cultural history, iconography and art history, Greek and Roman weapons, Roman hoards and water finds, the history of ancient sciences (medicine, astronomy) and Germania in antiquity.
