Ernst Otto von Arlt

Ernst Otto von Arlt (born March 8, 1818 in Matzenbach (Oberamt Crailsheim), † March 24, 1892 in Neu-Ulm ) was a Württemberg colonel, later a royal Prussian major general and finally an engineer officer from the square in Ulm.

His parents were Heinrich von Arlt (* April 11, 1778; † November 21, 1869) and his wife Freiin NN von Landsee (* September 21, 1793; † April 8, 1871). His father was a Württemberg colonel and commander of the Hohenasperg Fortress as well as a knight of the Württemberg Order of Merit. His brother Karl was first lieutenant in Ludwigsburg.

Life

On September 23, 1833 he became a pupil of the officers' training institute in Ludwigsburg. On October 3, 1837, he was transferred to the garrison company on Hohenasperg with a patent on October 7, 1837 . From there he came to the 5th Infantry Regiment on October 5, 1840. From May 16, 1842 to November 8, 1857, he was posted to Ulm to build the fortress. During this time he was appointed first lieutenant on June 1, 1842 and transferred to the engineering department of the General Staff on July 28, 1842; on January 23, 1851 he became a captain.

On November 9, 1857 he came to the engineering corps in Ulm. There he was promoted to major on June 24, 1862 and at the same time appointed commander of the engineering corps and sub-director of the Ulm Fortress. On September 13, 1866 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and on April 13, 1867 to the genius director of Ulm Fortress on both banks of the Danube. On April 17, 1868 he was then appointed colonel.

During the Franco-Prussian War he was at the sieges of Paris and Belfort .

In June 1871 he received the Crown Order 2nd Class and on October 25, 1871 the Komtourkreuz of the Bavarian Military Order of Merit. After the founding of the German Empire, the Württemberg Army was incorporated into the Prussian Army and so Arlt became Prussian on January 21, 1875 Colonel with patent on April 13, 1868 and an engineer officer from Ulm. On April 18, 1875 he received the character of major general. He received his retirement and retirement on May 18, 1876 and the Order of the Red Eagle 2nd Class with Oak Leaves .

He died on March 24, 1892 in Neu-Ulm. He is buried in the old cemetery in Ulm.

Works

During his time in Ulm, Arlt worked as a local researcher and was a member of the Association for Art and Antiquity in Ulm and Upper Swabia. He published several articles on the subject:

Arlt married Luise Günzler on January 16, 1848 in Ulm . The couple had several children:

  • Alfred (born December 7, 1848), Premier-Lieutenant, died unmarried
